And AGAIN! Here we go, starting the massive ranch clean-up…………..
Aren’t purging and releasing detritus just the most cleansing and enlightening things to do? We all need to do this on a semi-regular basis. Re-assess, simplify, pass it on, say goodbye you’ve done your job and now its time to move on. It doesn’t matter the scale. Its the same process for the top of your desk or your closet as it is for a barn. Imagine a barn full of, well, lots of “collections” and materials for future “what if” projects and boxes stored for relatives because, hey, you’ve got room for it. Ha!
At first, it may seem hard to part with that old rusty tool that “may come in handy some day”. Or that pile of dirty moving blankets that you may need “just in case”. You know that drill. Truth is, when “that day” comes, chances are that tool or material won’t be what you need anyway. After 15 years here, I have learned how seductive it is to have so much room to store things. How one’s discernment skills whither from dis-use. How its ok to have a lack of discipline for making new acquisitions because there is always room for more. And how it doesn’t matter how many metaphorical barns you have, they always get filled up.
But then you get into THE ZONE — and it is a sweet sweet spot to be! You kick it into gear a couple hours into the search and sort mission. You are done with it. Forget the fine-tooth picking, deciding what’s good and what’s not. Let’s get this done! Formerly whining co-purgers become gleeful willing partners in seeing who can clear out the most stuff the fastest. That old matching (and ragged) luggage that you might be able to sell some day? Pshaw, dump it. That big box of greasy unsorted nuts and bolts that you were going to organize back in 1998? GONE! Let the Salvation Army make some money off it. If its not needed, then out it goes. This “what if” stuff can really weigh you down.
It does our hearts so much good to cleanse and purge and make our physical space new all over again. To be able to see and appreciate the individual trees again, instead of just the density of the forest. Definitely a kind of re-birth. A rejuvenation. A huge energy booster. And absolutely a LIGHTNESS.
For me, all this cleaning out and cleaning up makes loads of new room for creativity. New ideas keep popping up. Mental pictures for our retreats and classes here next year become more visible, more real. Spaces to do cool things! And so we keep going on, one beautiful new purging day after another. These definitely each feel like a Day One.
And Lisaville continues to produce and prosper. I’m adding new items almost daily. This week its earrings, made from polymer clay. The colors are rich and vivid and the big danglers are light as a feather. No more droopy ear lobes! These and more can be found in my Etsy shop:
